Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is the best starting point for understanding Presicce. The square gathers together the façades and entrances of the old seat of feudal power, later transformed into the Ducal Palace, while the surrounding lanes lead quickly to Piazzetta Villani, the Mother Church and the smaller courtyards of the historic centre. What looks at first like a quiet limestone square is therefore the meeting point of the town's civic, aristocratic, religious and working histories.

Its most unusual feature lies below street level. Presicce developed an exceptional concentration of cave oil mills, and several of them extend beneath or immediately around the square. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries these underground workplaces formed part of an export economy that sent lamp oil through Gallipoli to markets across Europe. Palace rooms, garden terraces and paved public space above; millstones, presses, storage chambers and animal stalls below: the contrast explains why Presicce is often described as a town built on ‘green gold.’

Take time to read the square as part of a wider ensemble rather than as a single monument. Renaissance windows and the palace loggia sit beside later alterations; entrances in the paving and at the edges of the square hint at the underground network; warm local stone changes character from the clear morning light to the softer evening hours. The square is also still a lived public space, so its atmosphere changes with local events, religious celebrations and everyday village life.
